Video Essay: Money for Nothing

This film tackles the idea of a Universal Basic Income: an economic plan to scrap welfare and instead pay every citizen a guaranteed monthly salary. I had to do a lot of research for this story and in particular sourced a lot of information from Martin Ford's book "The Lights in the Tunnel" and Jaron Lanier's "Who Owns the Future?" Narratively this film attempts to take the audience on a defined emotional journey, from feeling the idea of paying people to exist is radical and unrealistic, to eventually being convinced that it is inevitable. In a break from my usual style, we shot some vox pops with people in New York City, which I used to underscore the idea that being freed from structured work might unleash a new era of creativity and progress.
