Video Essay: Painting In the Dark

After a two year hiatus, I decided it was time to revisit my series The Long Game, which kicked off my video essay work. They are still the most popular of my films and I still get emails from people who say its changed their life. I first stumbled upon the idea of autotelic work about a year or so before I made the film.

It's quite a complex video with the story playing out over ten scenes. I borrowed a technique used by the french filmmaker Alain Resnais and told the life of Vincent Van Gogh entirely through his own paintings, which presented some new challenges and forced me to think a lot harder about storyboarding.
