John Hirst: killer turned lawyer
Personal Project, November 2009
This is one of the first pieces of digital storytelling I attempted, way back in 2009. I spent some time in the company of John Hirst, a convicted killer, who had taught himself law while in prison. He had successfully taken the British government to court over the controversial issue of prisoner votes. After experimenting with video, I chose an audio slideshow format for this piece as it allowed a greater intimacy and was less distracting. When I watch this piece, I see a very naïve storyteller who doesn't really know what he was doing. I have come a long way since!
